Mole Valley Ramblers

- friendly walking in the heart of Surrey

As the use of software tools for walk planning and navigation is becoming more popular, we have prepared some notes to help those wishing to become more familiar with these useful tools. However, map and compass are still the most essential and reliable navigation tools when walking, so make sure you know how to use those too.

Which software to use?

To help you decide which route planning tool would be best for you, we have prepared a comparison of the two most popular products: OS Maps and ViewRanger, now Outdooractive. You can read our analysis here  (prepared in May 2020). Other products are, of course, available for you to consider if you wish.

Sharing routes online

Both of these products allow routes to be shared online, for which you might find these step-by-step instructions helpful. Click herefor OS Maps or herefor ViewRanger.

Our members find these products very useful for route planning and navigation, so we hope these notes will make it easier for you to benefit from using them too.
