We hope you have enjoyed taking on some of the walking challenges we have been setting since 1 February and a big Thank You to all those who have shared their adventures with us. As we are beginning to move out of Covid-19 lockdown, the week commencing 5 April will be your last chance to participate. For a reminder of how to do that, please read on.
Our challenges have been designed to add a little more interest or purpose to your walks, perhaps turning some of them into more of an adventure. These range from nature spotting to local history, navigation tests, or just things that catch your eye. Click here for a complete list of all the challenges.
We encourage you to share your adventures and photos with other MVR members. One way of doing this is via the MVR Social Group on Facebook, so if you are not already a member of that group please sign up by following these instructions. Alternatively, your findings may be shared by sending an email to
We would also like you to share the locations of your "finds" so, if you have a smartphone, now might be the time to download what3words and OS Locate, both of which enable you to determine your location. What3words will pinpoint it to a 3x3 metre square, whereas OS Locate will give you a 6-figure grid reference (with a 2-letter prefix), which identifies a 100x100 metre square. You could use this challenge as a prompt to familiarise yourself with how these useful apps work.
When you walk, consider taking some or all of the following items with you:
- Map and compass
- Smartphone with the above apps loaded
- Camera (if no smartphone)
- Binoculars and/or magnifying glass
- Notepad (paper or electronic)
- Litter picking tool and bag
- First Aid Kit
We hope you will enjoy tackling at least some of these challenges when you walk for exercise, which must of course be conducted in a Covid-compliant way.
Please let us know how you get on – we look forward to hearing from you.
